April 24th – Toronto, ON – CRUSH COVID: 24 Hours of Cycling

The Toronto Hustle Cycling Club and Michael Garron Hospital Foundation partnered together to give cyclists in Toronto and around the world the opportunity to support health care workers in their mission to CRUSH COVID.

CRUSH COVID Zwift Marathon was a 24-hour virtual team ride for cyclists which started on Friday, April 24 at 6:00 p.m. EST. With spring events being cancelled, there was no need for winter training to go to waste as this event allowed cyclists to safely team up with friends, family or colleagues from the security of their own homes on trainers to complete the ride individually or as a team.

The event saw 418 participants register and raise over $220,000 dollars for the Toronto community of front-line health care workers.  Toronto City Councillor and Toronto Hustle founder, Brad Bradford kept the event going by cycling for the full 24 hours starting at 6pm on Friday, April 24th and up to 6pm the following day – a total of 850km from his living room in East York!  Riders kept Brad company in 2 hour shifts including Todd MacKay from TECHCOM who joined the fun for the 8th & 9th legs to give everything he had to complete an “Imperial Century” which in cycling lore means 100 miles (160 km) of cycling at once.  In Todd’s words “This was the longest I’ve ever ridden before but when you knew Brad and his team had already been going for 12 hours, you endured the pain.  Besides, our front-line workers have to pull long shifts at time to battle this pandemic and it’s the least I could do.” With the support of a few of the TECHCOM team members, Todd was able to personally raise $1,275 for the cause.

In times like these it’s important to be there for each other and CRUSH COVID is just another example of how when the community needs help, people can bond together and make a difference.  We’re not out of the water yet but together we are flattening the curve by staying physically distant, washing our hands and giving our health professionals the time they need to help those in critical need and develop a vaccine to combat COVID-19.
